Santorini, is one of the most scenic and beautiful Greek islands and one of the most famous in the world.
The actual name which comes from antiquity is Thira.
It is set in the southern part of the Cyclades group of islands.
Neighbours with its sister isles of Thirassia Aspronisi that if one looks from above form a circular shape and in the middle there are the two craters Nea Kammeni and Palea Kammeni.
The whole island was once the volcano that after its eruption, almost 4500 years ago formed Santorini and its Caldera that offers magnificent views of the craters and the sunset.
Santorini's volcano is one of the few active volcanoes in Greece and Europe.
Fira, its capital, is set in the middle of the cadera. It is the bustling center where nightlife and the main business center is located.
The cosmopolitan and romantic village of Oia village, is on the northern part of the island, and looks like a piece of art.
Akrotiri on the South is where the Archaeological site of the prehistoric city has been excavated since 1963.
It is the Greek Pompei, but with one exception. It is 2000 years older than Pompei. By visiting the site as well as the island's museums, the guest gets an idea of how ancient Greek islanders used to live. Multi storey buildings and sewage systems prove the level of the civilization that was destroyed by the volcano's eruption.
Not far from Akrotiri, there is the Red Beach. Well known location that its name came from the terracotta colour of the cliff behind the beach. The contrast of the red cliff against the blue sea is fantastic.
In the centre of the island is the village of Pyrgos. A small but very beautiful little town which is set in an elevated position offering magnificent views.
The east side of the island has two main destinations, Kamari village and Perissa village. Both known for their black pebbly beaches.
They are very well organized with numerous restaurants, bars, sea-side taverns, beach bars and sea sport facilities.
Santorini is full of diverse and beautiful surprises. Although it is tourist destination it has an excellent agricultural produce. The local tomatoes, fava beans, the white eggplant and last but not least the local wines with its signature variety of Assyrtiko (white dry earthy).
It is a destination that combines beauty, history, romance, entertainment and great cuisine.
It's an experience!
